Bulk Density is the density measurement of powders. There are several techniques and devices used to perform this test on raw materials and finished products. The test is typically used to verify mass balance versus product yield equations.
R. D. Laboratories, Inc. utilizes a Sargent-Welch Scott Volumeter apparatus for bulk density determination. Bulk density (flowability) is a critical performance factor for many excipients. This can also be important during the manufacture of many products, whether it be a tablet or powder finished dosage form. Other bulk density measurements can also be made in a graduate cylinder or a Solvay apparatus, depending on the test requirements.
