Penetrometer/Consistency
R. D. Laboratories, Inc. utilizes a Humbolt Universal Penetrometer that is capable of both ASTM and USP consistency determinations for petrolatum and similar raw materials. In some instances finished products such as firm ointments will be tested for consistency. This may be needed to ensure consistency, i.e., that no separation has occurred. R. D. Laboratories on occasion has developed methods for soft chew type products as a stability quality control specification.
