Infared Absorption
R. D. Laboratories, Inc. is able to perform identification testing by Infrared Absorption. This is a commonly sited procedure in nearly all compendia such as USP/NF, EP, BP, JP, FCC and ACS. A sample spectra is compared to a reference standard, typically over the range from 2.6 µm to 15 µm, the “fingerprint” region. Samples and standards may be prepared as a KBr pellet, neat mount, liquid cell or mineral oil dispersion. An attenuated total reflectance (ATR) attachment is available for such samples as plastics, powders and sometimes liquids. On rare occasion, FTIR can be used to quantify a sample against an appropriate standard.
